Mount Elgon is an ancient, eroded volcano whose summit holds one of the world's largest calderas. On its Ugandan slopes, hiking trails pass waterfalls, caves and bamboo forest, while the nearby Sipi Falls — a series of three cascades — has become a destination in its own right.
The mountain is also home to the Bagisu people and their famous imbalu initiation culture, and the area grows some of Uganda's best arabica coffee, grown high on the mountain's flanks.
