The Mountains of the Moon

Western Uganda, on the border with DR Congo

About 996 km²
The Rwenzoris are Africa's fabled Mountains of the Moon — a range of glaciated peaks on the equator, with alpine meadows, giant lobelias and heather forests that look like another planet. Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, at 5,109 metres, is Africa's third-highest summit.
Not every visitor needs to summit: shorter treks through the bamboo and afro-alpine zones offer spectacular scenery for hikers of moderate fitness, and the region's foothill communities offer cultural walks and coffee experiences.
