Why walking works
Kampala was built across seven hills, and each one has its own character. From a vehicle you see traffic; on foot you hear drumming lessons, smell roasting plantains and get pulled into conversations. Walking is how locals actually experience the city.
Old Kampala
Start in Old Kampala, the city's historic heart beneath the Gaddafi National Mosque. The climb to the top rewards you with a view across all seven hills — and the winding streets below hold some of the oldest shops and stories in the city.
Markets and street food
Nakasero market spills colour in every direction — matoke, jackfruit, groundnuts. Owino is the whirlwind version, where anything in Uganda can be found. Between them, learn the lore of the rolex (rolled eggs, Uganda's greatest culinary export) and the best fruit stand for pineapple.
Go with a guide
Our walking tours are led by guides born and raised here, and many are led by women guides from our own team. You'll see more, understand more and eat better. Ask us about the current routes and meeting points.
