The permit
Gorilla trekking requires a permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and numbers are strictly limited to protect the gorillas. Permits sell out months ahead for the high season, so the moment your dates are fixed, we secure yours and confirm the price in your quotation.
The day
You'll be at the ranger briefing by early morning, assigned to a gorilla family according to your fitness and interests. Treks last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, led by rangers who know the families personally.
Then the hour: once you find the family, you have exactly one restricted hour in their presence. It is, by most accounts, the best hour in travel.
Rules that protect the gorillas
Visitors keep a minimum distance, don't trek while ill, keep voices low and never use flash photography. These rules protect the gorillas — who share most of our genes — from human illness and stress.
How fit do you need to be?
Moderate fitness is enough for most families; some treks are demanding climbs. Tell us your comfort level and we'll request an appropriate family — Bwindi's four trailheads offer everything from short walks to full-day adventures.
