National park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Gorillas and golden monkeys among the Virunga volcanoes
Location
South-western Uganda, on the borders with Rwanda and DR Congo
Size
Uganda's smallest national park (about 33 km²)
Mgahinga protects the Ugandan slopes of three of the Virunga volcanoes — Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo. Its bamboo forests are home to the Nyakagezi gorilla family and a large population of golden monkeys, striking primates found only in this region.
Because the park is compact, visitors can combine gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking and a full-day volcano climb in just a few days — and the terraced foothills around Kisoro are among the most scenic in Uganda.
