National park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Home of the mountain gorillas
Location
South-western Uganda
Size
About 321 km² of ancient montane rainforest
Bwindi is one of Africa's oldest rainforests, an ocean of green ridges that has survived the ice ages. Beneath its canopy lives roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, alongside chimpanzees, forest elephants and hundreds of bird species found nowhere else.
Trekking is organised from four trailheads — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo — and each morning small groups set out with ranger guides to spend one magical, restricted hour with a habituated gorilla family. Treks range from an easy stroll to a demanding climb, so let us match you to the right sector and family.

Getting there & best time

Best time: Trekking is possible year-round; the drier months of June to September and December to February offer firmer trails.
